Area information
|
Puerto Madero
Its closeness to downtown, extensiveness and river view make it one of the most exclusive neighborhoods in Buenos Aires.
Over the last two years several high-category residential buildings were constructed or are under construction, such as El Faro Towers, River View Towers, Le Parc Puerto Madero Towers, Mulieris Towers (under construction), Repsol-YPF Tower, or Renoir Towers, all of them with a height in excess of 426 ft (130 m) up to 562 ft (171.3 m), such as the Renoir Towers, which will be among the highest towers in Argentina.
Plaza de Mayo
The Plaza de Mayo was the foundation site of the City of Buenos Aires. It is surrounded by some of the most important historical buildings and points of interest: The historical "Cabildo", the Casa Rosada (seat of the Executive Branch of government), the Metropolitan Cathedral, the building of the Government of the City of Buenos Aires and the headquarters of the "Banco Nación".
San Telmo
San Telmo is one of the areas that has kept mostly unchanged in time within the ever changing Buenos Aires, with colonial houses and streets, many of them still of cobble. Some of its attractions include old churches (such as San Pedro Telmo), museums, antique shops and the San Telmo Antique Fair at the main square, Plaza Dorrego. Tango and candombe activities are also performed for locals and tourists visiting the area.
Obelisco
The obelisk of Buenos Aires is a National Historic Monument, a landmark of the City of Buenos Aires. Situated in the "Plaza de la Republica", at the intersection between Corrientes and 9 de Julio Avenues, it was built in celebration of the fourth centenary of the first foundation of the city.
Colon Theatre
With privileged acoustics, the renowned Colon Theatre is one of the largest and most beautiful opera theatres in the world. Its building started in 1889. It was designed by Francesco Tamburini; but after his sudden death, he was succeeded by Victor Meano, who developed the project until he died in 1904. The works were completed by the Belgian architect Jules Dormal.
The grand opening took place on May 25 1908, with the performance of Aida by Giuseppe Verdi. It is located in front of the Plaza Lavalle (San Nicolas), in the same place that used to be the Del Parque Station of the Buenos Aires Western Railway, head of the first railway line in Argentina.
